We are excited to announce that, thanks to funding from The Longstone Trust, we are able to start research and development for a new project called THE SAME CLOTH.
THE SAME CLOTH will explore and expose the global fast fashion trade, specifically the value of women’s labour and spending power as well as the ecological impact of the industry. We will explore the ways in which women are ‘held hostage’ by the system at all stages of production, consumption and disposal. From the harassed working-class mother picking up an outfit in the supermarket, for whom cheap clothing is the only option, to the women and girls in ‘developing’ nations locked into underpaid dangerous factory work, and on to those in South America whose only employment option is back-breaking work in the used clothing industry. What can we, in Glasgow, do to change that? And what about the environmental impact and the pollution caused by materials, dyes, means of production and disposal? In THE SAME CLOTH, we will ask not only ‘who made my clothes?’ but ‘where do my clothes go?’ Subject to further funding, we plan for this research stage to lead to a full-scale performance in 2023.
